Introduction

The stricto sensu Graduation Programa in Letters and Linguistics (PPGLL, in Portuguese) from the Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), constituted by the cycle of regular studies following the undergraduation, works with Master’s and Doctorate degrees, in the fields of Linguistic Studies and Literary Studies. The PPGLL aims at the education of technically and scientifically qualified personnel for the exercise of professional activities in teaching and research, aiming at the advancement of knowledge in the areas in which their activities are focused.

The PPGLL started as a Graduation Course – Master’s in Letters and acted initially, between 1972 and 1974, in an arrangement with the Universidade de São Paulo, in the fields of History and Letters. Professors at that institution taught subjects and were responsible for the supervision of the first students. In 1974, the UFG Graduation Course in Letters became autonomous through Resolution 077/74 of the Conselho Coordenador de Ensino e Pesquisa (CCEP, Coordinating Council for Teaching and Research).

In 1985, through Resolution n. 240, the CCEP changed the denomination of the course to Graduation in Letters and Linguistics. The Master’s in Letters and Linguistics worked until 1995 with three main fields: Brazilian Literature, Literary Theory, and Linguistics. Then, there was a reformulation with two main fields: Linguistic Studies, and Literary Studies, which are still in force.

In the following years, the PPGLL kept consolidating its acting in each field of knowledge, with research projects, subjects, dissertations, academic productions, as well as broadening the number of permanent teachers. In 1999, the Program better defined its lines of research and, since then, tried to optimize them in order to create a conversion between research projects, guidance, production, and publication.

In July, 2002, CAPES/MEC approved the creation of the Doctorate level at PPGLL, meeting an institutional longing and a regional demand. Doctorate has been showing a strengthening of the Program, looking to remain in the spotlight as a center of reference in the Brazilian Midwest, through the education of personnel for teaching, research, extension, and intellectual production in the Fields of Letters and Linguistics. The PPGLL has capacitated professors from its own College of Letters at the UFG, from the Universidade Estadual de Goiás (UEG – Goiás State University) and also from other institutions of higher learning, not only from Goiás, but also from other Brazilian states, receiving students from Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Pará, Tocantins, and from the Federal District.
